Titanic Panic

Come and watch the craziest race in Ireland on St Patricks Day

The challenge is simple. Build your homemade raft. Launch it into the Boyne just above Swifts Wave and try to stay out of the cold March water while floating over rapids, under 4 x bridges and between castles and medieval ruins.  The first raft to make it to the safe harbour of the Castle slipway (a relatively short paddle of about 3/4 mile) wins. We will also give a Titanic prize for the raft that sinks first and a prize for best dressed raft. The rest of the losers will be doomed to a years worth of slagging, shame and dreams of revenge.

You can enter as a 2 person raft or a 4 person raft and all proceeds will be given to Meath River Rescue.  All rafts must be homemade, human-powered and made from non-toxic materials. We provide the safety equipment, the marshals and water rescue for anyone who needs it.

If you prefer to stay dry you can just come along and watch the race. Applaud the bravery. Admire the well-engineered rafts. Laugh at the mayhem. The race will start at 1.30pm and finish just in time for the town St Patrick’s Day Parade. The route goes through the centre of the town so you should be able to see it from any of the bridges or walkways along the river.

The race will start from our base just above Swifts Wave at Jonathan Swift St in the centre of the town

  • Where is the best spot to view the race?

Where is the best spot to view the race?

All the rafts will enter the water above Swifts Wave at our base so this is the best spot for the start. The rafts will pass under 4 bridges in the town and you should be able to see them from there. Alternatively, any of the footpaths along the Castle will give you a great view.
